Foreign devils, finance and informal empire: Britain and China c. 1900-1912

Article Abstract:

The interests and operations of two of the largest Peking-registered companies, the Chinese Engineering and Mining Company and the Peking Syndicate, and their relationship with the Foreign Office are scrutinized. The scrutiny reveals a picture, in which, the crosscutting cosmopolitan interests subsumed under 'the City' pulled in different directions at different times.

Mongolia in 2005: Sharing power, dealing with corruption

Article Abstract:

Mongolian politics, in 2005, was dominated by struggles to fence off the 'grand coalition' government from the vicissitudes of turbulent parliamentary politics, while citizens were ever more vocal in their demands to check the spread to corruption. Agriculture lost ground to mining as a contributor to gross domestic product (GDP).

Mongolia in 2004: Testing politics and economics

Article Abstract:

In Mongolia, the year 2004 was marked by contested parliamentary elections and a rebounding economy. During the elections, the country successfully demonstrated its commitment to pluralistic democracy and the challenges before the new government is to ensure that economic growth reduces persistent poverty.
