Forging "The Adirondacker." (identity construction by residents of Adirondack Park, New York)

Article Abstract:

Residents of the Adirondack Park area in New York responded to a land use controversy by adopting the constructed identity of 'Adirondacker' in 1990. Examples of the 'Adirondacker' identity occur in photocopy lore, protest song and oral tradition. Residents also use cable television and public protests to reinforce the image of the 'Adirondacker.' Parodies by other groups also help to define social boundaries. The 'Adirondacker' image includes references to the group as an 'endangered species' and to their history as rugged European settlers and Revolutionary War participants.

Social identity in organized storytellling

Article Abstract:

Professional storytellers establish their identity as storytellers through different avenues. Some storytellers can remember telling stories as children and being captivated by the power a story can have on a listener. Others decided as an adult to become a storyteller, and the identity was born with the decision. Other storytellers established their identity based on response from the audience. The birth of a storyteller is a dynamic process that connects internal talent with social need.
