Gandhiji on the central vista: a postcolonial refiguring

Article Abstract:

Forty years of debate surrounded the transformation of the central vista of New Delhi, India, from a representation of imperial rule into a symbol of national honor and pride. The changes to the public space were created to legitimize the elites' political role and show how India had eliminated colonial influences. British influence is still evident in the use of statues of national leaders and the nation's acceptance of some Oriental views of its past leaders.

The Islamic independence movements in Patani of Thailand and Mindanao of the Philippines

Article Abstract:

The apparent political concessions that have been won from the Philippine government by the Moros of that nation's Mindanao province and the failure of the Patani Malay Muslims in Thailand have spawned the question of what has led to the relative success of the former and the failure of the latter. Three theoretical propositions are advanced by scholars which are applied to these two Muslim movements, whose origins and contemporary character are analyzed.
