Squatters or Tenants: The Commercialization of Unauthorized Housing in Nairobi

Article Abstract:

Squatting is no longer a viable concept in Nairobi. Squatting is defined as the illegal occupation of land and construction of shelter for one's own purposes. These settlements are outside the law and in constant danger of destruction. The intervention of capital into this setting has created shanty town real estate. Illegal sub-divisions are being sold for owner-occupation. A small-scale rental sector has emerged in many Latin American unauthorized settlements. In Kenya, the unauthorized rental sector is on a large scale. The squatter has become a tenant. There has developed a certain political acceptance of this situation. Outside investors are increasingly dominating this situation.

The fall of Constantinople

Article Abstract:

Ottoman forces captured Constantinople in 1453 and ruke by Muslims meant that eastern Christendom developed separately from the west, since the patriarchate remained, administering Orthodox Christian communities. Moscow became a major religious center, with Constantinople lost. Conflict arose between the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires in south eastern Europe. Turkish rule continued until the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the debate on Turkey's role in Europe has deep roots.
