"I was going to build a new Republican party and a new majority": Richard Nixon as party leader, 1969-1973

Article Abstract:

Richard Nixon gained a poor reputation as President for his work as leader of the Republican party where the attitude towards the party was seen as neglectful at best and destructive at worst and it seemed equally clear that he had little concern for the political fortune of his party at large. There were few American presidents of the modern era who paid much attention to their responsibility for party leadership and the nature of Nixon's support for the Republicans distinguishes him as a party leader of notable strength rather than weakness.

Black masters: The misunderstood slaveowners

Article Abstract:

The African American slaveowners in America, during the time of slavery, were not 'slaves without masters', but people who asserted their limited rights in the southern society and accumulated wealth and in some cases, position of planters. But most were artisans and entrepreneurs who exploited slave labor for prosperity, while others viewed slavery as oppressive and only sought the freedom of loved ones and friends who were slaves, by freeing them or making life easier for them.
