India in 1998: the travails of political fragmentation

Article Abstract:

Political chaos dominated most of India's affairs in 1998 even as the country displayed remarkable resilience in the face of factional fights among political parties. Political fragmentation was evident in the general elections held in February and March as well as in elections for state assemblies held in November. The first resulted in a hung Parliament while the second saw a decline in voter support for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. Meanwhile, the national economy worsened despite the country's apparent immunity from the ill effects of the Asian financial crisis.

The Burma road to the past

Article Abstract:

Burma's traditional social system has hampered its economic and political development. Modernization has remained but a vision for Burma, largely due to the Burmese's resistance to sociocultural change and economic progress. Still, the greatest hindrances to Burma's economic productivity remain its tradition-bound, nationalist political leadership and the subservient simple folk's acceptance of elite rule. This behavior has been shaped into form by the poor Burmese's actual living and notions of life that were historically conditioned and generated as cultural systems.

Singapore in 1998: the most serious challenge since independence

Article Abstract:

Singapore experienced one of the most trying periods in its history in 1998. Just when the government thought the country had weathered the Asian financial crisis, the economy suddenly went into a technical recession. Singapore also had problems in foreign relations, especially with Indonesia and Malaysia. These economic and diplomatic issues had certainly put a dent on the country's march to progress, and will certainly test the mettle of the administration and the people in general.
