Indian defense spending

Article Abstract:

India's cut in defense spending since 1990 has given it the opportunity to improve its defense efficiency and plan future policies. Defense spending has been curtailed due to the rupee devaluation and hard currency crisis. While the percentage share of the navy has fallen, that of the air force has risen. The army has been instructed to reduce its manpower and modernize its weaponry. Maintenance, operational costs and training have been adversely affected by budgetary cuts. Technology and improvements in electronic warfare methods are being given top priority.

South Asia after the Cold War: winners and losers

Article Abstract:

The post-Cold War era has enabled India to reexamine its foreign and economic policies. Contrary to what is generally believed, the demise of the Cold War has become a bane rather than a boon for India. The Indian government has taken a more realistic and pragmatic approach to enhancing its relations with the US and other Western countries. It has also adopted liberalizing policies that will serve its economic and trading interests. India will increasingly become a power to reckon with in the Indian Ocean.

Determining India's force structure and military doctrine: I want my MiG

Article Abstract:

India is unlikely to emerge as a major power in Asia despite its acquisition of sophisticated weaponry. Threats by the insurgency movements and bureaucratic politics do not determine establishment of India's arsenals. Resource availability and external suppliers largely determine acquisition efforts. With the declining available resources and decreasing number of suppliers, India's capability to produce its own weapons is diminished.
