India's unfinished journey transforming growth into development

Article Abstract:

The economic performance of independent India is placed in historical perspective in order to evaluate the past and reflect on the future. It is shown that the turning point in economic growth was 1951 A.D. in the long twentieth century and 1980 A.D in India since independence, thus making it impossible to attribute the turnaround in India's performance to economic liberalization beginning 1991.
