Japan in 1998: nowhere to go but up?

Article Abstract:

Japan had another disastrous economic performance in 1998, with the government seeing no immediate solution in sight. In fact, the country's economic woes dominated other relevant issues, including domestic and foreign policies. The crisis was further complicated by a political vacuum as the Japanese people tried desperately to find a strong leader who will initiate the moves necessary to save the nation from hitting rock bottom. Given the current scenario in Japan, its leaders are expected to focus much of their attention on how to deal with the economic downturn.

Japan in 2002: an up-and-down year, but mostly down

Article Abstract:

Japanese economy stagnated in 2002, inspite of Prime Minister Koizumi Junichiro's attempt to reform the moribund economic system, which was blunted by resistance from the affected groups. Moreover, the domination of the foreign policy agenda by the growing crisis over the North Korea's intensification of its nuclear weapons development program made Koizumi to cancel out Koizumi's earlier progress at normalizing relations with Pyongyang.
