Languages on Stage: linguistic pluralism and community formation in the nineteenth-century Parsi theatre

Article Abstract:

The Parsi theatre provides a good example of the emergent nature of linguistic identity in the nineteenth century particularly the kinds of fluidities still prevalent in oral culture is largely eliminated in the print media of today. The high incidence of multilingualism, the instability of standard or accepted and the perception that they demanded distinct idioms are apparent in the Parsi theatre and its printed literature.

Private lives, state intervention: cases of runaway marriages in rural north India

Article Abstract:

Analysis of a series of court cases from Haryana-Punjab involving runaway couples to argue that legal intervention delegitimizes such individual attempts at breaking out of the traditional system of marriage alliances and criminalizes all such attempts is discussed. The existence of laws may act as a deterrent in some cases of runaway marriages in which the adulthood of the girl is unambiguous.

India for the working classes: the maps of the society for the diffusion of useful knowledge

Article Abstract:

The maps of India, which were published under the supervision of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (SDUK) during the 1830s and 1840s, are examined. The manner in which the Company's Indian empire was depicted, described, taught and made useful to the working classes is revealed by a close examination of the maps, their symbols, names, regions and perspectives.
