Laughter and subjectivity: the self-ironical tradition in Bengali literature

Article Abstract:

The role of literary self-irony in the construction of the Bengali self is discussed. Topics include literary humor in earlier Bengali literature, Bankimchandra's 'Kamalakanta,' the self-ironical tradition in Tagore, Sukumar Ray's 'Aboltabol' and the meaning of nonsense, and dreams of an other self as a different way of thinking about the Bengali self.

The Indian heirarchy: culture, ideology and consciousness in Bengali village politics

Article Abstract:

The author argues the political structure of villages in Bengal, India, have a more complex structure than is generally acknowledged. Evidence for fluid, changing roles contest the simplistic divisions of "uneducated," "rural," "peasant" and "subaltern" that have dominated earlier discussion.
