Les Fondements rationnels de la pensee africaine traditionnelle

Article Abstract:

Reason is given a valued place in traditional African thought. For example, the high value given to reason is apparent in the oral tradition of the Bafia, the Bamileke and the Beti of the Cameroons, in tale cycles in which the tortoise is the main figure. The tales exalt intelligence, affirm the superiority of rational behavior over emotionalism, and identify stupidity with superstitious behavior. Article text is in French.
