Lien Heng (1878-1936) and the "General History of Taiwan"

Article Abstract:

The Taiwanese culture that was not an extension of the local Min-nan culture, but rather a diverse and distinct one that was compatible with China's main cultural stream of the Central Plains, chung-yuan wen-hua is described. An introduction of Lien Heng's times and his personality, exploring the path of his extensive writings, which includes a comparison of the 'General History of Taiwan' and the 'Historical Records', is presented.

The prospects for cross-strait dialogue in light of domestic political factors on Taiwan

Article Abstract:

There are several domestic factors in Taiwan affecting the cross-straits talks with mainland China. The elections in Novemeber 1997 saw a focus on domestic issues and this is a sign of the growing strenth of Taiwan's democracy. This very democracy makes the idea of 'One Country, Two Systems' impractical. Mainland China should recognize tht Taiwan comes to the negotation tables with voters' support.

This article addresses the impact globalization has had on Taiwan. The author, focusing on Taiwan's diplomatic relations, maintains the country has suffered from many diplomatic setbacks but is ready to rebuild its international relations and work toward world peace.
