Madwomen in the drawing room: Female invalidism in Ellen Glasgow's gothic stories

Article Abstract:

Ellen Glasgow's gothic stories represent cultural symbols to denounce social, medical, and moral attitudes towards women that somehow encourage unnatural state of women invalidism. Through her writings, Glasgow ascertains the potential power for change when women create mutually enriching bonds of affection and understanding and refuse to be refined only through the male gaze.
