Political economy of the East Timor conflict

Article Abstract:

The politico-economic problem of East Timor in Indonesia needs serious consideration despite the persisting tension in the area. The Timor region is infested with outsiders from other parts of Indonesia, who control the economy and the job market. The Indonesian government has released statistics which imply the progressive nature of East Timor. However, the poverty, illiteracy and unemployment in the region remains pertinent issues. The Indonesian armed forces continue to terrorize the Timor region in the name of fighting pro-independence guerrillas.

Indonesia in 1997: the tinderbox year

Article Abstract:

The year 1997 promises to go down in Indonesia's history as the most traumatic, owing to the severely diminished confidence in the country's administration. Indonesia's troubles took roots in the social unrest in Java and outer islands and were exacerbated by the devaluation of the currency, which saw the rupiah surpassing the 5,000-to-the-dollar mark. The stock market plummeted to 335 and double-digit inflation set in. The state of Pres Soeharto's health is not helping to boost confidence nor halt the groundswell of discontent.

Indonesia's new order: a model for Myanmar?

Article Abstract:

Myanmar's State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) cannot copy the Indonesian model of social and economic model because of some factors inherent in its history. For instance, the ethnic problem has never been a consideration in Myanmar's effort of nation-building. Moreover, SLORC tended to subscribe to violence and Burmese officers remain parochial. The 'tatmadaw' has also lost its prestige and the military suffers from a grave credibility problem.
