Presidential address: questions about China's early modern economic history that I wish I could answer

Article Abstract:

Several theories have been forwarded regarding the development of China's uniquely distinct economic history. One of these theories presuppose that economic growth results from technological creativity and depends on the interaction between scientific, technological and productive practice in the presence of a political and social context where such development is encouraged. It also states that the subsequent adoption and utilization of such technological advancements takes a long time.

Liberating animals in Ming-Qing China: Buddhist inspiration and elite imagination

Article Abstract:

'Fangsheng', which can be interpreted as the practice of liberating animals in captivity or of saving their lives, dates back to the fifth century. However, it was from the sixteenth century that the profile of 'fangsheng' was raised, when academics began to express their feelings for animals and write of 'fangsheng' incidents. The practice of 'fangsheng' during the Ming and Qing dynasties is analysed.
