Man who captured beauty queen title

Article Abstract:

Damien Taylor, a 24-year-old Australian hotel porter and life guard, became something of a sensation when he not only entered but won a hitherto female-only beauty contest. Taylor is the 1993 winner of the Wintersun Quest, formerly the Wintersun Contest. Taylor also hoped to compete in the Miss Australia contest, an annual event held to benefit a charity, the Spastics Centre of New South Wales. Unfortunately, the charity choose to consign Taylor to a special male category after surveys found that the Australian public opposed allowing men to compete against women in pageants.

Review essay

Article Abstract:

Three books published in 1996 and 1997 examine the culture of Asian Americans. The three books, by Lisa Lowe, Paul R. Spickard and Gordon Chang, examine the lives of Asian immigrants and their place within US culture. They are also works of cultural activism in that they seek to change opinions on Asian-American culture and on US political and social history. The works reveal the extent to which judgements concerning appearance play a part in perception.
