Doorway doses help defeat honey bee's "vampire" enemy

Article Abstract:

Varroa mites (varroa jacobsoni), which feed on the haemolymph fluid of honey bees , can now be effectively exterminated using plastic strips containing pesticides. The method involves hanging the strips by the beehive entrances so that small quantities of the pesticide's active ingredient stick to the bodies and wings of the bees as they enter and leave the hive. There is no adverse effect on the bees nor on the honey produced. Zoecon Corp. pioneered the development of these strips under the brand name Apistan. Cost ranges from $2.50 to $4.00 for a treatment using two strips.
