Singapore in 1996: extended election fever

Article Abstract:

Singaporean politics in 1996 was characterized by defensive stance against attempts by the opposition to influence public debate over issues of higher costs of living and inequalities in wealth and income distribution. The economic downturn did not help this turn of events. The electronics manufacturing sector was the hardest hit by the decreased international demand for computers and semiconductors. The telecommunications and consumer electronics sectors also suffered from decreased output.

Singapore in 2005: "Vibrant and cosmopolitan" without political pluralism

Article Abstract:

Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's controversial decision to introduce casinos as part of the 'remarking' of Singapore's economy was accompanied by officially tolerated public criticism of that decision. However, other attempts at organized protests and political expression on a range of issues were subjected to the customary suppression that underlines the government's continued resistance to political pluralism.

Singapore in 2004: Long-awaited leadership transition

Article Abstract:

Goh Chok Tong decided that the strong economic recovery was the right time for the long-anticipated handover of Singapore's prime minister to Lee Hsein Loong. In foreign relations, the earlier leadership change in Malaysia fostered improved bilateral ties, but a visit by Lee to Taiwan generated friction with Chinese authorities.
