Sir William Jones, Biblical Orientalism and Indian scholarship

Article Abstract:

British intellectual Sir William Jones's Indian scholarship, which has elements of traditional hermeneutics, can be comprehended more fully by viewing it in terms of contemporary biblical criticism. Jones believes that the Bible should be read first as a literary piece before making theological interpretations. Jones allows other kinds of interpretations for understanding the Bible in addition to the literal interpretation.
