Taiwan investments in China and Southeast Asia

Article Abstract:

Taiwanese investors have been venturing west to China and south to Southeast Asia through the mid-1990s. Taiwanese companies have also been venturing into California since the 1970s. Taiwanese investors in China and Southeast Asia vary according to industrial sectors and geographical locations. Taiwan's exports to China in 1994 amounted to $12.6 billion while exports to the five ASEAN countries and Vietnam reached $11.4 billion. The Taiwanese government aims to develop the country into the operational center of manufacturing, transit shipping, financial services and telecommunications for the Asia-Pacific region.

Japanese investment in China: strategies in the electronics and automobile sectors

Article Abstract:

Japan has substantially invested in China, particularly in the electronics industry, citing cheap labor as its primary reason. Hitachi, the first Japanese electronic firm to venture in China has been successful despite problems in worker performance, infrastructure and source of electricity. Japan is reluctant to pour investment in the automobile industry in China due to difficulties in the economic and political aspects there. The electronics industry is expected to expand in the future but the automobile industry remains uncertain.

Building China's information technology industry

Article Abstract:

China's pledge to further reduce tariffs in relation to its pending application for World Trade Organization membership and its decision to join the Information Technology Agreement have raised one major issue. This issue is the rapidity with which the nation will implement the tariff liberalization policies committed to in these negotiations. Only by quickly shifting to a tariff-free information technology trade policy can China provide a positive incentive to the continued growth of the Chinese electronics industry.
