Thailand in 1992: in search of a democratic order

Article Abstract:

Nineteen ninety two introduced a new political order in Thailand. The general elections held in Sep, 1992 that instituted Democrat Party leader Chuan Leekpai to power also marked the end of the military regime in the country. However, Thai economy remains at its fragile state as strained trade relations with the US, drought in the coming dry season and development of a mass transit sytem in Bangkok could weaken government stability. Regional security also continues to be a primary problem for Thailand. Evidently, the path towards democratization may prove to be difficult.

Papua New Guinea in 1992: challenges for the state

Article Abstract:

The national election held in Papua New Guinea in Jun, 1992 led to a significant political transition in the country. However, Prime Minister Rabbie Namaliu's extraordinary success in managing the crises he inherited from previous regimes received little attention. At present, the numerous problems that beset the country are unlikely to be resolved by popular support. Security issues remain vital in the maintenance of the nation's stability.
