The Sri Lankan elections of 1994: the Chandrika factor

Article Abstract:

Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's victory in Sri Lanka's presidential elections held on Nov. 9, 1994 was not surprising. Poll results showed that the North-East ethnic problem remains the main concern of Sri Lankans. As part of her campaign strategy, Kumaratunga distributed posters showing her with a white dove, which symbolized her goal of peaceful ethnic relations. When Kumaratunga assumed power, she immediately lifted the long-standing embargo on the transport of essential goods to areas held by the insurgent Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelan.

The year 1996 in Sri Lanka was marked by political battles waged against the insurgent Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). The People's Alliance government, which was led by Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, adapted a strategy of defeating the LTTE in battles and offering them positions in the government. As for the economy, 1996 was disappointing because GDP plunged from 5.5% in 1995 to only 3.7%. Article Abstract:

Chronic ethnic conflict remained the Sri Lankan government's most difficult challenge in 1995. However, the people's faith in Pres. Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's leadership was proven by her party's overwhelming victory in the parliamentary election in Aug. 1995. The economy performed well and surpassed gloomy predictions in 1995, with GDP growth at 5.5%.
