The United States and Asia in 1995: the case of the missing president

Article Abstract:

Pres. Bill Clinton was less committed in strengthening US relations with Asia than in dealing with domestic politics in 1995. As such, 1995 marked a year that showed a US that was less interested and less engaged in Asian affairs. The year also highlighted strained relations between Japan and the US and a serious deterioration in US-China relations. The US can anticipate potential challenges in its interests should Asian countries develop a less than favorable interpretation of the US' insufficient commitment to the region.

The United States and Asia in 2004: Unfinished business

Article Abstract:

The US-Asian relations in 2004 were continued challenges to the regional status quo, but the United States was intent on deflecting and deferring the possibility of major change. As a second President George W. Bush presidential term approached, the agenda confronting US policy makers seemed to be reflecting equal measures of unfinished business, pressures for changes on both sides of the Pacific, and the ever-present potential for a major regional crisis.
