The crime of punishment: the psychology of child abuse and the Meretlein incident in Gottfried Keller's "Der Grune Heinrich."

Article Abstract:

Gottfried Keller's "Der Grune Heinrich" contains a psychologically complex depiction of child abuse which examines abuse from the viewpoints of witnesses, abusers, and abused. The novella on Meretlein is an essential part of the book that also allows the author to contrast and trace Heinrich's growth into adulthood. Keller deftly places his characters' responses to the abuse into a context that helps the reader understand both the psychological and sociohistorical aspects of child abuse.

Devouring metaphor: disgust and taste in Kleist's 'Penthesilea.'(Heinrich von Kleist)

Article Abstract:

Heinrich von Kleist depicts a continuous interplay of beauty and distaste in his play 'Penthesilea'. The concepts of taste and disgust are examined in roles contrary to Immanuel Kant's philosophy, his third 'Critique'. Disgusting behavior is taken as far as possible along aesthetic boundaries, yet inexplicably bound to the very thing it seeks to replace, namely metaphoric beauty. The unpopularity of 'Penthesilea' probably stems from this complex duality of taste.

Review Essay: Heinrich Heine at 200

Article Abstract:

Heinrich Heine's 200th Birthday in 1997 spawned a frenzied effort to celebrate the author in Duesseldorf, Germany. This review summarizes the text editions, biographical studies, and essay collections published in honor of the exiled Jewish author. Despite a host of new and newly constructed information, Heine remains as enigmatic as ever. Accounts of Heine's life range from pure fantasy to some overly sober details.
