The effect of government policy and institutions on Chinese overseas acculturation: the case of Malaysia

Article Abstract:

Issues regarding the ethnic relations between Chinese immigrants and Malaysians in Malaysia are examined, focusing on Malaysian policies that restrain Chinese acculturation. Topics include an overview of the Chinese immigrant population, theories of acculturation, the role of political institutions, Chinese education, and comparisons with Thailand and Indonesia.

Overseas Chinese merchants and multiple nationality: a means for reducing commerical risk (1895-1935)

Article Abstract:

This article discusses Chinese nationalism, anti-Japanese sentiments, and the activities of overseas Chinese merchants. The author argues that overseas merchants were not always agents of Chinese nationalism, but often adopted multiple nationalities, including Japanese, to further their economic opportunities and lessen commercial risk.

A case of contagious legitimacy: kinship, ritual and manipulation in Chinese martial arts societies

Article Abstract:

The rites and obligations of Chinese kinship relations and Chinese martial arts lineages are described by focusing the practice and organization of Baguazhang. A study is conducted to examine ancestor worship and the multivocal symbolism of Chinese funerary documents.
