The embourgeoisement of the Kerala farmer

Article Abstract:

The once community oriented farmers of Kerala, India are moving towards a more bourgeoisie society where the farm is an economic base from which family members pursue educational and non-farm financial opportunities. The Kerala farm household once focused solely on the farm and the surrounding community, as the society grows more capitalist households focus on economic developments in cities. Greater income allows for children to be educated in non-farm enterprises and offers women the opportunity to manage business aspects of the farm as the men look to other opportunities.

Gods, groves and the culture of nature in Kerala

Article Abstract:

Hindu mythology about sacred groves has been understood by some Westerners to refer to generic Hindu environmentalism concerning primeval forests, but this is simplistic. In much literature on the subject, the sacred grove is defined as a botanical ideal, not by local understandings. The fact that hunting was practiced in Kerala suggests an ambivalence with or antagonism towards nature that is incompatible with myths of utopian environmentalism.
