The feminization of violence in Bombay: women in the politics of the Shiv Sena

Article Abstract:

The participation of women in violent public acts against Muslims in Bombay, Maharashtra, can be attributed to the Shiv Sena, a regional political party which attracts lower- and middle-class Hindu women through economic and ideological incentives to give women a sense of belonging and power. Its success in doing so through its grassroots network of day care centers and income-generating programs, however, has been largely helped by the erosion of trust in the government and the ongoing de-industrialization of the city which increased unemployment among the poor.

Political secularization and the future of secular democracy in India: the case of Maharashtra

Article Abstract:

The involvement of political party Shiv Sena in the 1993 riots in Bombay, India and the 1996 parliamentary elections in Maharashtra State has been examined. The study seeks to find out if Shiv Sena's use of religious nationalism is a serious challenge to secularism in the state of Maharashtra. The riots demonstrate an extreme form of politics in action and it may be possible that Sena's militant use of religion in these incidents may be moderated by the demands of electoral politics.

The rebirth of Shiv Sena: the symbiosis of discursive and organizational power

Article Abstract:

Shiv Sena's ascendancy in West Indian politics was a result of its successful deployment of institutional and discursive power. The party practiced intimidation and introduced a highly-effective system of institutions which furthered its mobilizational activities. Its political presence was further strengthened by its emphasis on a pan-Hindu religion and focus on an expanded discourse of Hindutva which embody Hindu nationalism.
