The politics of songs: myths and symbols in the Chinese Communist war music, 1937-1949

Article Abstract:

Popular songs were used by Chinese Communists to further their cause and demonize members of the opposing Guomindang. The musical propaganda used by Mao Zedong and his followers intentionally shaped popular perception rather than reflected social infrastructure. The early Chinese Communist Party's songs' rosy view of war and death envisioned communism as China's only viable future, portraying Mao as the embodiment of political and spiritual light.
