Japan's role in the Cambodian peace process: diplomacy, manpower, and finance

Article Abstract:

Japan plays a strategic role in the peace process in Cambodia. Indeed, the Cambodian conflict is a testing ground for Japan to assert its ability to mediate in international disputes. Toward this end, Japan hosted the Tokyo Conference on Jun 5, 1990, to find a common ground for national reconciliation in Cambodia by trying to convince the Khmer Rouge to rejoin the peace process. Japan's other positive contributions to the Cambodian peace process come in the form of personnel and financial assistance.

Revitalizing Korea's chaebol

Article Abstract:

Korea's conglomerates called 'chaebol' constitute the core of the nation's rapid economic expansion since about the 1970s. They are also the fundamental, underlying reason why Korea is in economic crisis. Six of the nations top 30 chaebol went bankrupt in 1997 and more are expected to go into court receivership in 1998. Unless these conglomerates change the manner in which they do business they will die. Thus far, the dominant strategy has been to muddle through reform.
