The scholar, the intellectual, and the essay: Weber, Lukacs, Adorno and postwar Germany

Article Abstract:

Intellectuals Georg Lukacs and Theodor W. Adorno influenced and expanded the use of the essay in Europe and Germany. Adorno extensively used the essay form, which traced its development in German writing from Lukacs theories. The essay is a form of writing which goes beyond scientific and systemic rigidness in an attempt to explain the truth of a situation, making it an excellent format for the thoughts of public intellectuals. Max Weber's ideas on scientists' ethos are discussed as background to Lukacs's work and the development of the essay form.

The theatrical destruction of subjectivity and history: Brecht's 'Trommeln in der Nacht.'(playwright Bertolt Brecht)

Article Abstract:

Bertolt Brecht's play 'Trommeln in der Nacht' is often interpreted as a commentary on the politics concerning one of two Berlin revolutions following World War I, but an alternative reading could find Brecht's work more a discussion of history and identity. Though the work considers aspects of political commitment, its greater meaning lies in its creative means of fragmenting the traditional subject. Brecht's play offers a cultural understanding of revolutions and their history.
