"This is reality. Right now, right here. So be real". Reality television and the Amish "other"

Article Abstract:

The UPN reality television show Amish In the City, which aired during the summer of 2004, and its treatment of the Amish and their initiation folk custom 'rumspringa' is explored. Set in Los Angeles, Amish in the City depicts eleven young men and women, five of whom are Amish and six of whom are not, as they cope with living together in the same house for nine weeks over the summer of 2004.

Resisting reproduction: reconsidering slave contraception in the Old South

Article Abstract:

Evidence shows that women slaves used contraception as a form of resistant against their masters. By preventing pregnancies, they reduced their masters slave capital. Historical records show that the women made an effective contraceptive from cotton root. The use of abstinence, infanticide and abortion are also discussed.

Woman as abject: resisting cultural and religious myths that condone violence against women

Article Abstract:

The myth of feminine evil is allowed to dominate human consciousness and social arrangements, and it provides the setting for woman's victimization. The story of Mary Daly is presented and her experiences of violence, which took part in her life is described.
