Transfigurations of the mother in Genet's 'Journal du voleur' and 'Un Captif amoureux.' (Jean Genet)

Article Abstract:

Jean Genet's works reflect his generally positive relationships with women, but suggest a more ambivalent attitude toward the mother, especially in his autobiographical works 'Journal du voleur' and 'Un Captif amoureux.' Genet was abandoned by his natural mother when he was six months old, but had a positive relationship with his foster mother. Thus, his works portray alternating images of the good mother and the bad mother. In 'Journal du voleur,' an imaginary scene with his mother reflects both his pain at being abandoned and his longing for his mother. In 'Un Captif amoureux,' a quest for the mother ends in denial and disbelief.

Jean Genet's anti-Semitism: fact or fiction?

Article Abstract:

Examination of Jean Genet's private papers after his death in 1986 suggested to some scholars he favored fascism and its anti-Semitic views, possibly conditioned by his strict Roman Catholic upbringing. However, close examination shows this attributed anti-Semitism is largely based on anecdotal evidence and the logical error of guilt by association.
