Ikea, which opened its first furniture store in the United States in Plymouth Meeting in 1985, plans to expand the number or stores in North America to 50 and to replace older stores with newer, larger stores. Ikea sells basic affordable furniture and storage units which is targeted at young couples moving in together and the first home owners in the after-college market.

The Degas and the Dance exhibition opens at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in February 2003. Pennsylvania Ballet dancer-choreographer Matthew Neenan was selected to choreograph a Degas ballet, the title of which is Le Travail.
