Money politics and transitions to democracy in East Asia
Article Abstract:
Money politics has promoted the democratization of the East Asian countries South Korea, Japan and Taiwan. The interrelationship between politics and economics in the region has also created a clean and autocratic Singaporean government, and in China, a type of corporatism that encourages economic growth. Money politics has also facilitated a type of reasoning among East Asian politicians characterized by a rationalistic costs and benefits calculus.

South Korea's bureaucracy and the informal politics of economic development
Article Abstract:
South Korea's economic development and political transition are influenced by the coalition of domestic actors, including the political leadership, the bureaucracy and the private industries. Citizens who pass the National Civil Service Exam may obtain employment in the bureaucracy and subsequent promotions. Personalism, as reflected in the ties of family, school and region, characterizes the South Korean bureaucracy.
