Women, resistance and the divided nation: the romantic rhetoric of Korean reunification

Article Abstract:

The dissident reunification politics of South Korea focus on feminine virtues and the Confucian polarization of masculine and feminine identities to reveal a unique and intrinsic relationship between love and politics. Dissidents try to prove that Korean reunification and marriage are essential prerequisites for the survival of the Korean nation. Their politics is based on the notion that Korean division has made the national culture vulnerable to Western influence. Idealized images of women are portrayed to advance the unification cause in cultural terms.

Foreign travel through a woman's eyes: Shan Shili's Guimao luxing ji in local and global perspective

Article Abstract:

Analysis of Shan Shili's Guimao luxing ji (Travelogue of 1903) helps find unique and revealing views on China's place in a changing, unsettled world and provides insights into how the new thinking about women was interpreted by a member of Shan's generation and elevated social standing. It is demonstrated that Shan's work gives an emblematic rendering of the predicaments faced by Chinese women at the beginning of the twentieth century as they imagined their future on a global stage.
