A big idea to suit the nation's grumpy mood

Article Abstract:

Labour party leader Tony Blair is beginning to put forward ideas which differ considerably from those which have traditionally been associated with his party. He is becoming increasingly confident, and now gives the impression of being ready for an election campaign. He has accepted that in the global market, deregulation and financial orthodoxy are vital, and has predicted that countries which save, invest and innovate will be the most powerful in the next century. He has put forward the concept of the 'stakeholder economy' as the next stage in modernisation in the UK.

Wired up and baring his soul

Article Abstract:

Labour party leader Tony Blair's vision of a youthful, optimistic society in the UK owes a lot to the political atmosphere when he was growing up in the 1960s. He hopes to be able to renew the country, promising a sort of spiritual regeneration. However, the reaction of ordinary people to this vision could be one of cynicism, as they have grown accustomed to being let down by politicians.

Labour's president without precedent

Article Abstract:

Labour party leader Tony Blair has enjoyed considerable success and support during his first year in office, and has been able to make extensive changes to the party. However, opposition to him is now beginning to emerge. He is not concerned by this, as he is aware that criticism is coming from people who will be of little significance in the new-style Labour party.
