A chilling audience with Dr Strangelove of Jakarta

Article Abstract:

Chief General Wiranto, head of the Indonesian army, claims that significant progress has been made towards restoring order in East Timor and that there is no need for an international peacekeeping force. He emphasizes that only the Indonesian army understands the people of East Timor and is in a position to bring about reconciliation there. He argues that bringing in a foreign force would lead to more violence, with the pro-independence majority being prompted to attack those opposed to independence. This view is not shared by the United Nations, which believes that the people of East Timor remain in great danger.

Save my people, Gusmao tells UN

Article Abstract:

East Timor rebel leader Xanana Gusmao has appealed to the international community through ambassadors of the United Nations Security Council to take action to save the ordinary people of East Timor. He has warned that delay in taking action will lead to genocide. Gusmao, leader of the Falintil pro-independence fighters, is highly respected among those in East Timor who have for many years sought freedom from Indonesia. His reputation has been boosted by the restraint shown by his forces in the face of the violence of the militias.

Revealed: proof that Indonesian army directed Timor slaughter

Article Abstract:

Evidence has emerged that the special forces unit of the Indonesian army played a significant role in directing militia activity in East Timor. This evidence will prove very embarrassing to governments that for many years have assisted with the training of recruits to this unit. Indonesia's military commander in East Timor has stated that he expects to hand over control of the territory to multinational forces shortly. However, there is uncertainty about the reception these forces will get.
