A clear idea for the images of our century

Article Abstract:

'Century' is a photographic record of the 20th century which contains many unfamiliar photos selected by Bruce Bernard. Bruce Bernard was the brother of Jeffrey Bernard, who had a drink problem and wrote for the Spectator magazine. Both men were well known in Soho, London, England. Bruce wanted to paint, but found work as a photographic archivist and he became especially adept at judging documentary photography. He was also able to remember prints well, but he did not benefit from the increase in value of photographic prints, sought by collectors.

Why not be shy in an age of chatter?

Article Abstract:

It has become very important in UK society to be seen and heard. For this reason, those suffering from shyness have become social outcasts, whereas in the past they were accepted and even regarded positively. Some observers believe that drug therapy could be appropriate, and SmithKline Beecham has been licensed by the government to commercialize its Seroxat treatment for social phobia/social anxiety disorder. However, the argument for making this drug widely available is not convincing.

'All I want is to chatter and joke again.' (experiences of suffering tongue cancer)

Article Abstract:

A man who had a large cancerous tumour removed from his tongue describes the effect this has had on his life. His difficulties with coming to terms with not being able to speak clearly are detailed, and his frustration with being unable to perform certain actions, such as kissing, are discussed. The psychological effects of going from being someone who chatted a great deal to someone who finds it hard to pronounce even basic words properly are described.
