A delicate balance

Article Abstract:

The new partnership between Scottish Ballet and Scottish Opera will involve the creation of a Joint Services Company with Scottish Opera's Ruth Mackenzie as designate chief executive. Scottish Ballet Managing Director Norman Quirk emphasizes that the funding of both companies will be ring-fenced, with Scottish Ballet therefore avoiding the risk of being used to fund Scottish Opera. He believes that Scottish Ballet is now able to work within its core funding of 2.1 million pounds sterling, which has remained unchanged since 1996.

Pocket dynamo

Article Abstract:

It can be very hard to choreograph and appear in the same piece, according to dancer, choreographer and director Aletta Collins. For this reason, she very much values being able to collaborate with people such as Tom Cairns, who designs her dance pieces. Her dance company is currently working on its third piece, '3 Sisters,' and this will tour along with 'Che Gelida Manina,' the company's first piece, in autumn 1997. Themes are drawn from the Chekhov play, but Collins avoids conventional storytelling.
