A devil at the heart of Japan Inc

Article Abstract:

Japan's Ministry of Finance (MoF) exerts great power over many areas of government activity and business in Japan. Its responsibilities include raising public finance, devising tax policies, setting national budgets and allocating funding to other ministries. Its officials have therefore gained a reputation for arrogance. They often follow a career at the MoF with a prestigious position in business, and the influence of the MoF therefore expands even further.

The unwanted Yankees of Okinawa

Article Abstract:

The recent gang-rape of a 12 year-old-girl by three US servicemen has prompted the residents of Okinawa, Japan, to protest openly about the presence of 52,000 military personnel and their families there. This has become a very sensitive diplomitic incident, and could severely damage relations between Japan and the US. Okinawa has seen a considerable number of incidents of this kind, according to the City Women's Policy Promotion Centre.

Lonely graves in the enemy's homeland

Article Abstract:

The 50th anniversary of the defeat of Japan in the second world war has highlighted the plight of civilian internees and prisoners of war who were held in Japanese camps in mainland Asia. It has also drawn attention to those buried in Yokohama, about whom there has been much less publicity. Most of those buried in Yokohama were captured elsewhere, and were used as slave labour in camps throughout Japan.
