A diplomatic change of face

Article Abstract:

Publicity encouraging people from ethnic minorities to apply for jobs at the UK Foreign Office seems to be bringing positive results, according to Linbert Spencer, minority ethnic liaison officer at the Foreign Office. The Foreign Office has enlisted the assistance of organizations such as race equality councils, and has sent volunteers out into local communities. Spencer feels that the main obstacle to increased ethnic minority recruitment is the Foreign Office's image of being staffed mainly by people who have had an elite education.

Governor, garden, pastures new

Article Abstract:

Former Hong Kong Governor Chris Patten is currently living very quietly in France, welcoming the opportunity to be away from media attention following the emotional trauma of the return of Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty. He is spending most of his time writing a book on Hong Kong and Asia. However, he will eventually return to the UK, and there is speculation that he may return to political life. He would probably prefer not to be closely associated with the Conservative party while it is so unpopular.
