A less than fond farewell to an increasingly powerless Commons

Article Abstract:

It is increasingly difficult for ordinary backbench MPs to influence government activities in the UK. It is argued that the power of parliament is waning, with some of this being attributable to politicians themselves.

Let's rule out this daft talk of merger with the Liberals

Article Abstract:

The most important issue that UK Prime Minister Tony Blair must address is that of the Labour party's relationship with the Liberal Democrats and the trade unions. Blair has had close contact with Philip Gould, who has written a book in which he states that it would be advisable for Labourism and Liberalism to unite, even though this would present significant challenges. Blair should be aware that, even if the Labour party were to merge with the Liberal Democrats, the result Gould seeks would not be forthcoming. Many Liberal Democrat voters would be likely to favour the Conservatives.

How could anyone accuse me of disloyalty to my leaders?

Article Abstract:

It is vital that debate takes place within the UK Labour party on issues such as the minimum wage if the government is to be effective. It is clear that Labour must mobilize both middle England and its traditional voters if it is to be successful in the next general election. Against this background, the issue of how the party selects its candidates is vital. Individual Labour MPs should not hesitate to criticize party policy on issues which are very important to their constituents.
