A new lease of life for flat owners

Article Abstract:

The UK's 1993 Leasehold Reform, Housing and Urban Development Act was widely criticized initially, with many people dismissing it as too complex and expensive. However, research indicates that this legislation has in fact brought benefits for people seeking to extend their lease or purchase their freehold. Rulings over purchase prices for freehold properties and lease extensions have become much closer to leaseholders' valuations than to those of landlords. Individuals are now more able to negotiate a good deal, especially as there is a growing body of case history.

Return of the million-dollar banker ...

Article Abstract:

Salary levels among financial analysts, investment bankers and dealers in the City of London are rising again, following several years of only modest remunerations. Salary levels have now returned to those of 1993, and some observers believe that there will be at least 1,000 dollar millionaires in the City of London by the end of the 1990s. Below them, many executives at leading banks and securities houses are already enjoying salaries of at least 250,000 pounds sterling a year.

Pensions denied when an unmarried partner dies

Article Abstract:

At present, public sector pension schemes only pay pensions to widows or widowers, thus denying unmarried and same-sex partners. This is in contrast to the private sector, where employers are increasingly paying out benefits to any surviving adult dependents. The Trades Union Congress is now to undertake a campaign calling for full pensions to be paid to the unmarried partners of pension scheme members.
