A real life-saver in Stoke

Article Abstract:

The North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary, Stoke-on-Trent, England, has the first trauma centre in the UK, run by four consultants in emergency medicine and two in anaesthetics, who work on a rolling rota. The consultant on duty sleeps at the centre. The centre is attached to the casualty unit and integrated into the normal service, so it can use consultants in all specialties covered at the hospital. Car accident victims suffer multiple injuries and are usually taken to the hospital with services for the most severe injury. However, this cannot be decided until all injuries have been examined.

Beasts can tame their own tempers

Article Abstract:

Anger control therapy is used for those concerned that they may harm someone and for people convicted for violence. Head of psychology in the Prison Service Dr Cynthia McDougall finds individuals take things personally and feel threatened. The therapy shows people how to handle their anger, why they become angry, and how to recognise the signs of impending violence. They are taught relaxation techniques, positive thinking, understanding other people's point of view and how to accept more responsibility for their behaviour.

Growing pain of violence

Article Abstract:

Publicity surrounding the case of Mary Bell, who committed murder as a child, has failed to emphasize the fact that those who commit acts of violence against others have very frequently been victims of violence themselves. Indeed, it is possible to argue that most violence is an attempt to make the victim feel how the offender once felt. It is rare for those who have been abused to not become violent in any form. If they do not, then they direct their aggression towards themselves instead.
