A spy in the house of God

Article Abstract:

Monsignor Luigi Marinelli's book 'Gone with the Wind in the Vatican,' which details sexual scandals, conflicts of power and financial mismanagement inside the Vatican, has attracted considerable controversy. The Vatican has sought to have the book banned, but it continues to sell in large numbers. Monsignor Marinelli has been committed for trial by an ecclesiastical court for libel, and could be ousted from the priesthood. His critics accuse him of gossip and scandal-mongering, but he continues to claim that everything in the book is true.

Art cannot serve spiritual ends when it has been created in sin

Article Abstract:

It is possible to argue that Cardinal Hume was very misguided in being seen on television under a station of the cross in Westminster Cathedral, London, England, carved by known paedophile Eric Gill. Cardinal Hume praised Gill's carvings, but failed to mention Gill's involvement in sexual abuse. This event reflects the fact that the Catholic Church has become very skilled at hiding the truth, especially in respect of clergy paedophilia. In particular, it fails to acknowledge the suffering of the victims of child sexual abuse.

Rome's matter of life and faith

Article Abstract:

Apapal commission studying birth control led to Pope Paul VI publishing his 'Humanae Vitae' on 29 Jul, 1968. The Pope said that love-making should not be separate from procreation, so contraception would be immoral. Although the advent of Aids may demonstrate the truth of his belief, many Catholics are unhappy with the ban on artificial contraception. It is a hindrance to the success of some marriages. John Paul II is preparing a new encyclical, which may give marriage partners more personal responsibility.
