A very different depression

Article Abstract:

In the Great Depression of the 1930's trade depended on the exchange of commodities. The fall in prices caused unbearable debt for many countries, leading to mass unemployment and the slump. In the 90's price inflation is the problem. The gold standard was similar to the European Monetary System, with Germany refusing to devalue the Reichsmark. International conferences did not help correct the situation; countries had to check their own reflationary finance and right their trade balance.

B is for biotype, and a very bad bug

Article Abstract:

The B biotype virus-transmitting whitefly has already caused extensive crop damage in the US and Spain, and is threatening crops in Australia, Asia, Africa and South America. It multiplies much faster than other biotypes, and transmits up to 60 viruses. Scientists are trying to research ways of preventing it reaching the UK, but are being hampered by lack of funding.

Visitors to Antarctica's South Shetland Islands can enjoy spectacular views of whales, icebergs and a wide range of birds. It is now possible to cruise between the islands, where the weather conditions are usually ideal for observing the wildlife. One of the most attractive islands is Deception Island, which is a volcanic crater.
