CHINA: UK GOVERNMENT IN AIDS INITIATIVE

Article Abstract:

The UK government's Department for International Development (DFID) launched an initiative on 13 June 2000 to deal with the fight against Aids in China. The five-year, GB[pound] 15.3mn scheme will entail the distribution of needles and condoms to drug users and sex workers in China. It is estimated that 0.5mn people in mainland China have the Aids virus, with unofficial estimates putting the figure at 4mn. There are fears that China may become the world's most affected country in terms of Aids.

AFRICA: US LOAN TO HELP COMBAT AIDS

Article Abstract:

The US Export-Import Bank revealed a plan on 19 July 2000 to provide nations in sub-Saharan Africa with US$ 1bn per year to help them deal with the Aids epidemic. Over 13mn people in Africa have died from the disease and almost 24mn have Aids or HIV across this continent. The planned loan would also assist sub-Saharan Africa in purchasing treatments for the disease that are made in the US. It is estimated that US$ 3bn is needed to deal with the disease, although this excluded the cost of drugs.

Bad blood behind China's crisis

Article Abstract:

The Chinese authorities have made many efforts to conceal the true extent of the country's HIV and Aids problem. According to the United Nations, China could have at least 10 million HIV/Aids sufferers by 2010.
