Afghan farmers reap lethal crop

Article Abstract:

The eastern Nangarhar province accounts for 80% of opium poppy production in Afghanistan. In 1995, the province produced about 1,300 tonnes of dried opium, and there are now well-guarded laboratories just inside Afghanistan, where hundreds of kilogrammes of heroin are processed daily. Although the local authorities in Jalabad say that they have wiped out 30,000 ha of hashish and opium fields since 1994, the effect is minimal. The United Nations is backing a campaign by the Drug Control and Development Unit, Jalabadad, to cut production.

Velayati offers no word of hope for Rushdie

Article Abstract:

The 'fatwa' imposed on writer Salman Rushdie will not be lifted, although no direct attempts are being made to kill him, according to Iranian foreign minister Ali Akbar Velayati. The Iranian government cannot prevent people from offering rewards for the murder of Rushdie, as people are free to express their own views, just as they are in other countries. Velayati refuses to go into detail about whether foreign relations can be conducted properly while the fatwa is still in force.
