Aids breakthrough remains an elusive glittering prize

Article Abstract:

Demand for a drug to combat HIV is running high and there are many clinical trials in progress, but so far only one drug, AZT, and two similar drugs are licensed for use. The impetus from HIV patients, rival scientists and drug companies is pushing research forward, so that in Feb 1992 there were 25 clinical trials continuing. Over 90 substances have been tested for effectiveness but only AZT has been licensed and the similar dideoxyinosine (DDI) and dideoxycytidine (DDC). In some trials small doses of all three drugs have been investigated.

Abortion most desperate

Article Abstract:

The case of Kawana Michele Ashley, who shot herself in the stomach when six months pregnant, causing the death of the baby, has raised many complex legal issues. She has been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter, and the case has become for civil rights campaigners. Many observers believe that similar incidents could take place as the anti-abortion Republican right cuts down on funding for abortions and more and more women are forced to attempt abortions alone.

Aids detective seeks positive identification

Article Abstract:

The Centre for HIV Research at Edinburgh University, Scotland is famous for genetic studies of HIV. Director Dr Andrew Leigh Brown investigated the case of the Florida dentist who infected three patients. He used sequence data to establish the degree of relationship between virus samples of those concerned. Three HIV-positive doctors in Britain treated many patients, who may have blood tests. The doctor concerned may not be the source of any HIV-positive infection.
